Annual Veterans Day Art Contest

We recently held our annual Veterans Day art contest. We announced the winners of the contest at our recent Veterans Day program. Ms. Angela Dragich, a Jeff Tech art instructor, explained that Veterans Day is a time to honor veterans who served our country. To participate in the contest, students created artwork to commemorate veterans. Along with the artwork, our students also wrote an artist statement about how their piece of art displayed the theme, “Honor our Country’s Heroes.” Our students shared this statement during the program. Our Jeff Tech faculty and staff helped judge the competition of nine students. The top three students received complementary art supplies. Our first place winner was Jonathan Herndon, second place was Courteney DeHaven, and third place went to Ariel Forrest. Congratulations to our winners for their excellent work!

Annual Jeff Tech Veterans Day Program

Jeff Tech held their annual Veterans Day program in the school gym on Thursday, November 9, 2017. The program was an assembly for all of the Jeff Tech students and staff with guests attending from various local organizations. The program opened with Courteney DeHaven, a Jeff Tech junior Cosmetology student, singing the "Star-Spangled Banner". Ms. Tamburlin, Jeff Tech English teacher, announced the winner of the Veterans Day essay contest – Iris Larson, junior Digital Media Arts student. The topic for this year's essay was “Do you think that all 18-24 year olds should be required to do two years of military or community service?". Ms. Dragich, Jeff Tech Art teacher, announced the winners of the art contest. This year’s theme was "Honor Our Country’s Heroes" with first place awarded to Jonathan Herndon, Building Trades sophomore. The second place award went to Courteney DeHaven, Cosmetology junior and third place went to Ariel Forrest, Drafting sophomore. Each student gave a description of what inspired his or her artwork.

Mrs. Sweka introduced the Jeff Tech military personnel: Mr. Richard "Chief" Hoare, Army; Mr. Kevin Kennedy, Air Force, Pennsylvania Air National Guard, Army National Guard; Mr. Brian Lenkerd, Air Force; Mr. Tom Weaver, Navy. Jeff Tech is also proud to have an adult Machining student, Mr. John Cooke, U.S. Marine. An armed forces medley served as a tribute by Ashley Jones, Culinary senior, and Courteney DeHaven, Cosmetology junior; all music for the program was piano accompanied by Mr. Nichol, Jeff Tech HVAC instructor.

Guest speaker, Dave Beamer of Brookville, spoke to the assembly about why he joined the Air Force, his enlistment experience, and what an honor it is to serve your country. Adult Machining student, John Cooke, explained what the folds mean as the Sykesville American Legion Auxiliary ladies folded the American flag. Members of the DuBois Honor Guard – Mike Skehan, John Hibner, Kenneth Pauling, Richard Trudgen, Allen Heberling, and Richard Wantuck – are always generous with their time and dedicated to educating those in attendance. This year, Mike Skehan explained the haunting tale of TAPS and the three volley shots that accompany a veteran’s funeral to close out the program.

We invited the honored guests to attend lunch, which the Brockway VFW Auxiliary graciously donated, in the Jeff Tech library. Please enjoy our Veterans Day photo with our honored guests.

Jeff Tech Offers New Alumni Service

The Jeff Tech Adult Education Department and the IT Department have worked together to create a new job availability service for all Jeff Tech graduates. Graduates of Jeff Tech can now register their biographical information on the new Alumni page that will allow them to be notified of not only news on alumni events, but if they choose, they can also be notified by text and e-mail when a job opening exists in the local area that relates to the skills learned at Jeff Tech.

"Jeff Tech is frequently notified of job opportunities with local employers, but for a variety of reasons, we may not have a current student attending Jeff Tech available for the position. In the past, we had no way of notifying our graduates quickly, easily, and inexpensively of those opportunities," Megan Bundy, adult education coordinator stated. "This new system allows any past graduate to register with our alumni and be notified of employment opportunities." To register for the job posting service, please visit our registration page or you may also select the About Us, then Alumni links in the top menu.
